Miracle Grill Post-Mortem

Miracle Grill closed on Sunday but they weren't serving dinner on Saturday night so it was empty all weekend except at the bar.

I am wondering if the ever-crowded Barrio right across the street put them out of business or if it's just a sign of the economic times that they couldn't make it. I had lunch there in October and had an inkling that things weren't going well.

What's your theory?

Miracle Grill made a decent go of it for quite a few years. But prior to that, its location on Third Street and Seventh Avenue has had a high turnover. It was almost considered a doomed restaurant spot. Does anyone remember the names of all the now-defunct restaurants that have been in there going back to the 1980's. I barely remember any names at the moment but I remember the ethnicity of the food...

--Miracle Grill
--a Peruvian place.
--a Vietnamese place called Nam.
--a bar, burger and bistro kind of place (good for brunch).

Cuzco used to have a great, cheap brunch special that included a mimosa. Also had decent cerviche.

Miracle Grill made one of the best burgers on Seventh Avenue, but the rest of the food was so-so.

before Minsky's that location was Capulet's in theSlope....sister bar to Capulet's on Montague street(no longer there either)
Before Capulet's it was a local bar as well but the name escapes me...many years drinking at that local.

I loved the fish stew at Cuzco.
We went to Miracle Grill on a Sunday afternoon after the church. It was so loud in there we couldn't hear ourselves talk. And the service was awkward too. Food neither bad nor good. So we never went back.

I thought the food at MG was really substandard. I remember having a duck taco at the original (in the East Village) years ago. THAT was actually good so I had hopes, but...blech.

Ugh. Barrio is terrible. I can't believe they would put Miracle Grill out of business.

Going backwards in time:

Between Coco Reef and Minsky's, it was Rex for about 3 minutes during the late 1980s. There was nothing special about Rex.

Many people in Park Slope still remember The Night They Raided Minsky's. Years ago, the late, great Huggy bear Ferris told me that Minsky's easily survived a cocaine bust (they blamed it on an employee). But (according to Huggy), the Feds finally busted Minsky's for refilling empty bottles from high-quality booze with cheaper brands.

Cocina Cuzco was the Peruvian place. Coco Reef was Malaysian. I guess originally it was Minsky's?

The Peruvian place was called Cuzco...and immediately preceded Miracle Grill. It closed in '04 or '05, I think?
