EARTH TONEZ: NEW VEGAN ON FIFTH

The name sort of reminds me of that pseudo French pronunciation of Target (Targey). What's with Tonez. That aside, someone over at Park Slope Parents has been to the new Fifth Avenue cafe and had very positive things to say.

There's a really nice new vegan cafe on 5th ave, just next to the great hot dog place Willie's Dogs between 4th and 5th streets. It's called Earth Tonez and it has homemade vegan deserts including cupcakes, "cheese"cake, double chocolate cakes and more. They also make nice soups, sandwiches, wraps and salads - all Vegan. They also have a kids' menu and a menu for the MS-51 crowd (it's nice to see that these spots and Get Fresh are providing alternatives to the confectioner's donuts and candy that I usually see the middle school students eating for lunch).

The writer of the above post asked me to add; "the owners are very open and friendly. Also, they do fresh squeezed juices and vegan burgers..."

I too enjoy the food here but after having a small get together of 10 people, I don't know if I want to go back. This is mainly because of the poor service I received when I arrived with a party of 10 to celebrate a special occasion. Mind you, that I had called in advance to notify the management that I planned on having a party of 10 arrive for a special celebration. I specified the time as well as the date and was reassured that all would be in order, however on the big day I was met with several mishaps. First of all, the cake that I had ordered for the meal turned out to be a different one all together. I was notified of their mistake just an hour before we were scheduled to arrive at the restaurant. Obviously it was too late to get the proper cake and since I had already paid for it in advance I was basically left with something I hadn't order. Secondly, they were understaffed which resulted in the one employee present and skilled in cooking, serving, etc. to take care of our needs as well as the other costumers who arrived during our dinner party. The one staff member who was there was phenomenal as she cooked and served us to the best of her ability. Yet, it was truly the management's fault for not having prepared properly for a party of 10 on a Saturday night especially since they had been notified over two weeks in advance of my coming with my friends and family. It is and was a shame to have to see my friends and family help serve and clean up because the one staff member who was there was inundated with work. All in all everyone really enjoyed the food and the staff member's kindness and attentiveness. But they all agreed that they probably would order out if they ever ate there again because it was pretty obvious that their sit in experience was less than stellar.

The Red Mango desserts are vegan but not everything is. Ask.
