The New York Times on Blogfest '07

Sewell Chan of the New York Times blog, City Room, had this to say about last year's Blogfest.

Certain neighborhoods in Brooklyn seem to have become the most blog-rich areas of the United States, according to a recent informal survey by the blog Outside.in. So where better to take the pulse of this rapidly growing community of writers, thinkers and observers than the second annual Brooklyn Blogfest?

The blogfest was begun last year by Louise Crawford, who runs Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn, which focuses on Park Slope and surrounding neighborhoods. Ms. Crawford said she expected perhaps a handful of people to attend last year’s event and was pleasantly surprised when 130 turned up.

Last night’s blogfest lasted an hour and was decidedly offline, with more than 100 bloggers and their admirers crammed into the second floor of the Old Stone House, a reconstruction of a 17th century Dutch farm house at the rear of J. J. Byrne Park in Park Slope. (Several people were turned away at the door after organizers said the house was filled to capacity.)

The event began, a bit formally, with a blessing by the Rev. Daniel Meeter, the pastor of Old First Reformed Church in Park Slope and himself a blogger. He gave a blessing then described blogging with some enthusiasm: “I just think it’s great. It’s a way of carrying the spirit over the wires. It’s marvelous what you do.”

Six bloggers, some of them quite well-known, then spoke on the question of what impact blogs have had on Brooklyn.

Read the rest here.

A BROOKLYN LIFE ON BLOGFEST '06

From A Brooklyn Life

ABL was a touch trepidacious about this Brooklyn BlogFest. Everyone knows that bloggers should not be seen in the light of day--and certainly not in groups of more than two or three. What would happen when such a large number of Brooklyn's blogerati conveyed for this historical moment in Brooklyn blogdom? (I'll let everyone take a moment to imagine something cataclysmic.) .....................................>

Nope, no kittens on a tightrope. Among the highlights: live blogging from Daily Heights and some rather non-photogenic lighting, inspiring stories from Design Sponge who quit her day job and now writes full time, general disdain (nee energetic hate) for Mr. Ratner and his project from No Land Grab, Develop Don't Destroy, and the Atlantic Yards Report.

And yes, the four minute speeches spiralled longer, but who cares when you have a history of blogging from Dope on the Slope that involves the cave man (photo illustration at left) and a hauntingly beautiful Brooklyn photo montage from Joe's NYC. Newcomer Brooklyn Record was there, alongside its parental unit, Brownstoner, who went rather light on the disguise. Prolific poster Gowanus Lounge (he actually lives in Park Slope, shhhh) spoke of his newest passion. Of course, much thanks go to OTBKB and her partner Hugh Crawford of Daily Pix for organizing. And all the other blogs who showed up that I haven't mentioned (nice to meet 423Smith and B61, SunsetParker) ... somehow this is turning into my imaginary acceptance speech for the Brooklyn Blogger of the Year awards ;)

There were even some non-Brooklyn bloggers in attendance, like Jake from Gothamist, who admitted that Brooklyn was kind of cool and sincerely wished for some more cookies.
